Trust, but verify ( when collaborating with stakeholders )

In Short:

While working with stakeholders from varied domains, Trust them with their claims but try to verify as much as possible and practically achievable.

In Detail:

Doveryai, no proveryai or ”trust, but verify,” the Russian proverb made famous by former US President Ronald Reagan, means that a responsible person always verifies everything before committing themselves to a common business with anyone, even if the other party seems completely trustworthy.

I came to know of this proverb when I was reading about zero trust security model or zero trust architecture (ZTA) but I think that it is equally important when working with stakeholders from different domains and backgrounds based on my experience. As a security professional I work with multiple stakeholders both technical and non technical and it needs a lot of trust with a lot of stuff that needs to be done by different teams. Usually we just trust and accept that stuff is done.

When we do not verify we may end up spending more time in cleaning the mess as compared to the time we would have spent in verifying it in the first place. Therefore Trust but try to verify as much as possible and practically achievable.
